Early Intervention

We know, you are a middle schooler and there is a lot to learn in school and outside of school. All kinds of demands and temptations come your way. Sometimes it is hard to make the right choice and you end up making the wrong one… This could result in a visit to the (assistant) principal's office because you have smoked, vaped or maybe even have used alcohol in school and/or on school grounds (including school bus). Or, maybe you did not break the school rules but you realize that vaping, smoking, using marijuana/ drinking alcohol is not helping you since your grades go down, you have a harder time breathing during sports, and/or you're having problems with your parents about your substance use. You realize you need help to QUIT. Together we will look at what made you make the choice to use? What are the benefits of using? Are there maybe any downsides to vaping/smoking/drinking? Most of the time this will be done in a small group with other MAUMS students, and sometimes individually. I have a lot of information in my classroom regarding teenagers and using substances and we will be going over some of the information.
Bullying and harassment has also to do with making choices: Am I going to be friendly to others, or not? Am I going to say something to someone that upsets them, or not? Do I want to be treated the way I treat this other person/ these other persons? Sometimes you might make the wrong choice and end up talking to the (assistant) principal because you were “caught” displaying bullying or harassment behavior. We will talk about the reasons why you decided to behave that way and we will look at behaviors you can use instead. We will watch brief videos and do small assignments. Most of the time this will take place in a small group with other MAUMS students, or sometimes it will just be you. We will go over some of the resources together.
In all first meetings you’ll fill out a questionnaire (GAIN-SS) that helps us understand how you have been feeling over the past year and to better understand if and how much the use of substances is impacting our life and/or to understand more about possible bullying/ harassment behavior.

For all students: Please know you can always reach out to ask me a question whether it is related to vaping, smoking regular cigarettes, marijuana, drinking, bullying e.g., or just to say "hi", by emailing me at [email protected]. I am here for you!
